Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for many legendary styles worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and performative fashion, most notably the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
