The original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has stated how parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch of a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

Ben Cohen, that established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he plans to personally create this new flavor as part of an individual collection highlighting issues the company was barred from addressing publicly.

Longstanding Conflict Between Creators versus Corporate Owner

This latest development intensifies the continuing tension among the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.

Both founders have asserted that Unilever along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".

Watermelon Sorbet becoming a Symbol of Support

Mr. Cohen stated via an Instagram video that he's developing a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas regarding naming options plus potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen stated in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”

The watermelon has become an emblem for support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, that mirror those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Activism plus Current Changes

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling their Israel business over to a local licensee, thus allowing ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming product line will be created through Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand which originally created several years back to support former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".

Leadership Changes and Future Plans

The founder stated that he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.

The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company recently, after decades with the organization, citing concerns that the company's autonomy had been compromised following corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.

Previously, Mr. Cohen commented how “My partner has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

"My heart leads me to keep working inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
