Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.
An freshly coined initialism surfaced a couple of months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, according to doctors such as child health specialists. Typically, it is uncommon for physicians to care for a child who has seen the death of their complete family. But, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary in scores of doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.
A Hell on Earth Despite a Supposed Ceasefire
Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that atrocities are continuing. The Israeli government has denied these claims, consistent with how it disavows everything it is implicated in. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from pursuing its declared purpose of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, although several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, we are told, is what international harmony resembles.
Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from competing in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is treated differently.
Contradictory Principles
Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an bid to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that international journalists are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy
Eurovision marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. A competition that once promoted harmony has transformed into a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
