Hardline Ex- Congressman José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile Incoming Head of State.
In a decisive runoff election, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.
A Resounding Win
After more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the votes, overcoming leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having earlier been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Platform Built On Security and Migration
Recognized for his staunch socially conservative views and admiration for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely centered on promises to address increasing violence and radically restrict migration.
He consistently blamed immigrants, particularly the approximately 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the campaign, he gave an final demand for them to depart before the new term begins or face deportation.
His plans envisioned U.S.-style measures such as constructing holding facilities, high walls, security fences, and increasing the military presence on the northernmost border.
Part of a Regional Shift
Numerous analysts view Kast's win as fitting into a wider rightward trend in Latin America, following recent political outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other analysts also describe it as a continuation of the regular rotation of power between left-wing and right-wing leadership since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Governing Without a Clear Mandate
In spite of his clear popular vote victory, Kast will not have an clear majority in the legislature, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even when various rightwing parties are combined together.
This legislative situation might hinder his policy goals, including a vow to reduce public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a measure for which he has not provided concrete steps.
"We have many questions about how a Kast administration will look like that remain unclear because he has not detailed how he will do them," said a political analyst.
The professor added, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is highly probable we will see austerity policies common for the right-wing. However the area with considerably less uncertainty is on law and order, because that has been his workhorse during the race."
