Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

At least 16 lives were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with a number in critical condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
