Ipswich boxer Fabio Wardley Poised to Become World Heavyweight Champion as Usyk Gives Up Championship
England's boxing star is expected to be elevated to heavyweight title holder after the Ukrainian champion decided to relinquish his championship belt
This follows after Usyk notified the WBO he would avoid a mandatory title defence against Wardley
WBO Statement
The boxing organization confirmed that Usyk had "elected to relinquish his belt after deep reflection"
Usyk continues to possess the multiple world titles, having beaten his British opponent at the famous London venue in mid-year to become a double undisputed champion
He initially achieved the four-belt undisputed champion in last year by beating Tyson Fury, before giving up the IBF title a month afterwards and opting out of facing the required opponent
"Organization head the WBO leader described Usyk as exceptional in a announcement"
"Officials expressed its profound respect, admiration and gratitude to Usyk, an unbeaten multi-division champion"
"His record represents one of the most remarkable and significant of the modern boxing era"
The WBO added that its institution will continue to support the champion and his camp"
Championship History
Usyk won the WBO belt in 2021 by defeating Anthony Joshua and went on to successfully defend multiple times
In mid-year, the WBO had ordered negotiations for a mandatory defence against interim champion Joseph Parker, only for a back injury sustained by Usyk to require rescheduling of the bout
Wardley's Rise
But Wardley, 30, took the interim title from his opponent with a huge upset in the 11th round at London's O2 Arena recently and was required to challenge Usyk before the September deadline
The WBO is yet to officially confirm Wardley's promotion but his promoter Frank Warren believes it is a formality
"The UK has a fresh boxing champion and a rising boxing talent"
"A truly extraordinary path I've seen in my 45 years as a sports manager and I could not be prouder of Fabio Wardley"
"Major contests coming up for the coming period as he maintains his title and creates a true legacy in the sport"
Wardley entered the sport aged 20, coming through the unlicensed white-collar scene and has had a limited professional record
