Israelis commemorate second anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations proceed
People have assembled throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the war in Gaza.
The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on that day.
He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed official commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of people who died in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed around the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' representatives convened in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of mediated discussions to examine the conditions of the plan.
A high-ranking delegate familiar with the negotiations said that an evening round of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.
The official said the day's discussions ended without tangible results, due to disagreements over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the opening period of the agreement.
He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have still not achieve any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.
Key Points in Negotiations
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid distribution
- Post-war administration of the region
Civilian Sentiment
In the city's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling survived the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "No place seems like home now and until every captive return not a single person will feel safe."
"When we see all home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can start to rebuild," she continued.
In front of the leader's home in the capital, people assembled to show their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel reports 48 remain in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be alive.
Activist a participant stated: "It's necessary do every compromise necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now consistently show that around the majority of Israeli citizens want the war to conclude in exchange for the release of the abducted.
Gaza Situation
At the area of the music event, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.
From the site, the boom of military attacks and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the intense Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the urban center, attacks were documented in the morning of that day in the western neighborhood, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"Once the dusk falls, the anxiety appears with it," relocated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.
"My family are afraid of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, clinging, notably my youngest child who places his head on me all night."
"Every second we check the reports to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."
Health Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had received the remains of six people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the southern city of the city said another two dead people had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the south region, health workers said.
