Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police shared video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “In fact, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in March.
