My feeling was I got a touch - Carey on DRS survival.

Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey stated he thought he had edged the ball when he was overturned on Decision Review System during day one of the third Ashes series Test against England.

Following his reprieve on 72, Carey proceeded to score a superb 106 to guide the hosts reach 326-8 at the stumps in Adelaide.

What happened?

The home side were 245-6 when Carey attempted a cut to the bowling of Josh Tongue.

The England team appealed confidently, thinking they had detected an edge, but on-field official Ahsan Raza was unmoved.

Following captain Ben Stokes challenged the decision, the technology examined by third umpire Chris Gaffaney displayed a spike but this appeared prior to the ball had reached the bat.

Gaffaney added he was of the opinion there was a space between bat and ball.

Therefore, Carey was allowed to continue.

"I felt a little noise as the ball went past," commented Carey.

"If I was given out I think I would have reviewed it, probably not confidently. It made a convincing sound near the bat."

Ongoing Scrutiny

Questions have been raised about 'the sound wave technology' throughout the series after a several dubious calls.

Bowling coach David Saker suggested the touring side may pursue this latest incident further with match referee Jeff Crowe.

"So far we've let it go, but this might push us to take action," Saker said.

"We've had doubts about it throughout. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. That's the situation."

Personal Milestone

His hundred was his maiden in Ashes cricket.

It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose father passed away in September. Carey's wife was crying in the crowd as the batter celebrated by looking to the skies.

"Scoring a century at home with family watching was incredible," said Carey.

"I guess you know as well why I was looking to the heavens. I'm fighting back the tears. It was a fantastic feeling."

Not New to Furore

This isn't Carey's first brush with Ashes drama.

He was the wicketkeeper who notoriously stumped Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 Ashes series, leading to a febrile final day.

Speaking about his survival he continued: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. That's cricket - you get the rub of the green sometimes."
