Weather experts have indicated a chilly beginning to the new year, with snow likely across much of the UK. Revelers are being urged to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Celebrations Proceed Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are set to proceed, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," stated the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks displays, with no rain and clear skies. The mercury are expected to be cold, making warm wraps a necessity, according to forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for Friday

Moving into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are expected on public transport.

The Mercury Set to Fall Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to hit the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Advisories Released

At the same time, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this meant the weather was likely to trigger significant impacts across medical and care provision. This encompasses a likely increase in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.

The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in security, wrapping up warm is completely essential.
