Seconds before his name was called, a nervous worry darted through the golfer's mind. He admitted he was hoping, "Please don't let it be an F1 driver once more."

"It's been a fantastic night for golf," the champion said. "Our game was celebrated in such a significant way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a huge moment for golf, and with any luck we can use that."

In this instance, however, there was no dramatic upset. The result was clear, allowing a delighted McIlroy to reflect on a memorable evening for both himself and the continental winners, who were named the year's best team.

Constant Motion

Instead of opting to stay for the official reception, McIlroy was already plotting his next sporting adventure. After played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and flown to the UK, he was returning immediately to Miami.

"It's been a hectic 24 hours," he said. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of a break over Christmas."

Unfinished Business

That said, McIlroy made clear he has no plans to become complacent, even after securing the set of all four majors earlier in the year. "I am confident I've got a more to give in me," he claimed.

"More majors, tour championships, Ryder Cups, that's great. But as long as you feel like you can keep progressing and have the drive, that's the key."

Squad Celebration

Meanwhile, fellow European Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to accept the squad honor, also lauded golf's exceptional night and his great friend's individual success.

"They are the memories that will stay with us for all time so to get the fan's acknowledgment for that is amazing," Fleetwood said. "Seeing Rory win, I think he is so worthy so much."

After it was noted that McIlroy was only the third player from golf to win the award in its seven-decade run, Fleetwood chuckled before adding, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"

Future Goals

His goal is to at last capture his initial major championship next year but he recognized McIlroy still craves more success. "If you want to be the ultimate competitor, and you're still driven, you'll find things to enhance," he noted.

Football Loyalty

As he was leaving, one final question arose. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been invited to show his trophies at Old Trafford before. Might he be tempted to do it again after his recent triumphs?

"If they quit letting in four goals at home," he replied with a laugh. "They're getting better. There's a hint of optimism around."

On the back of a truly spectacular season, it's no wonder that he is looking on the bright side.
