The Grisly Cartoon Film Ending That Haunts Viewers
Out of every mature cartoon movies I’ve personally viewed, no other has lingered in my mind as much as the terror-laced ending of the graphically gory and overwhelingly transgressive 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, the Spanish writer-director created a grim, melancholy and often savage universe with several minor , desolate twinges of hope.
While The Unicorn Wars feels like it came from a drive to push the medium even more, the director stated that it was rather an effort to express a global, multicultural message regarding “the mutual source of every conflict.”
That message is expressed via a band of brightly hued teddy bears , obviously inspired by a popular line of cuddly characters.
Being raised in a society focused on warmongering as well as the war machine, numerous the bears are fixated on slaughtering the mythical beasts, due to a religious scripture which states the bears they used to be rulers of the forest, until the horned beings forced them out.
A few did not entirely fallen for the indoctrination, and would rather try out drugs or mate in the forest.
In contrast to their gentle counterparts, these bright beings display sexual organs and obvious sex drives.
For a certain especially vicious, skeptical animal, Bluey, the conflict with the unicorns turns into a road to power — and particularly to supremacy above his gentler, more compassionate sibling the bear Tubby.
Bluey acts as a tormentor and an obvious antisocial figure , and while horror takes over his squad and kills his comrades sequentially, he seizes increasingly influence on his own behalf, through ever more bloody, damaging approaches.
Meanwhile, these mythical beings are experiencing their own terror, as an expanding, destructive monster in their woods.
“At the beginning, it seems like a humorous movie,” the director stated. “But then it turns into a more serious and sorrowful movie. And by the end, it becomes a terrifying movie.”
Unicorn Wars begins feeling a bit like one of the more playful films by a legendary filmmaker, which find a wicked pleasure in allowing drawn beings curse, engage in violence, or engage sexually.
Afterward it turns into something more like a darker film by that same creator, with increasingly visual gore , a palpable connection to the actual horror of battle.
Ultimately, it is an outright extreme drama carnage.
The terror that makes the film an ideal spooky-season viewing starts much sooner than that description suggests.
Unicorn Wars is one for the most dedicated fans of gore, for fans of extreme cinema who wish to view a movie they’ve never seen on-screen before, and can endure a narrative that offers no restraint.
View it with the lights off with no disturbances, and that ending will burrow under your skin and take up residence there.
